20 Things to Know about Deep Brain Stimulation

Description

Twenty Things to Know About Deep Brain Stimulation is an extensive and in-depth critical analysis of the field of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) from what many may consider a revolutionary perspective. This book demonstrates the unique nature and incredible promise of DBS and shows how it is unparalleled as a therapeutic intervention. Dr. Montgomery provides an epistemic analysis of the presuppositions, assumptions and fallacies underlying current clinical understanding of DBS as well as the physiology and pathophysiology affected by DBS. Reviews of the safety and efficacy for a number of conditions, patient selections and issues in the post-operative management are also included. Given the revolutionary potential and the complexity of DBS in an ever changing healthcare delivery context, the ethics of DBS are discussed in detail.

John P. McCartney,K.M. Thomas-Lukes,C.R. Gomez: Handbook of Transcranial Doppler

Handbook of Transcranial Doppler

Description

Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound, first introduced more than a decade ago, has steadily evolved into a dynamic, reliable, reproducible, and practical diagnostic tool. Clinical neuroscientists have found TCD to be an indispensable technique in the management of many types of patients. This book is designed to provide basic instruction in the perfor- mance and interpretation of transcranial Doppler ultrasonography for technologists, nurses, and physicians. The information included in the text is critical for the development of a strong knowledge base. It is not intended to be all inclusive, and the TCD novice is likely to use it as the platform upon which to build his/her experience in the application of TCD. This book is organized as a step-guided approach for the performance of TCD, and it includes specific guidelines for interpretation of the TCD save forms. We hope that the reader finds it useful during what we think is the most difficult phase of this technique-the learning curve. John P. McCartney, R.V.T. Kathleen M. Thomas-Lukes, R.N., M.N.

The Dinner Ladies: 170 Recipes to Cook Now, Eat Later

Description

Take the stress out of your day and get excited about dinner again -- with a little help from the Dinner Ladies. The evening, when time and patience are at their shortest, can be the worst part of the day to have to throw a meal together. The solution is a repertoire of reliable dinners that can be made ahead of time, to stock in the fridge or freezer. It might be on the weekend, it could be late at night or in the morning when the baby's asleep. If you can find half an hour a couple of times a week, you can prepare a few dishes and stick them in the fridge or freezer - then, every time you pull out one of your delicious, homemade dinners you will congratulate yourself on your foresight and wow everyone you know with your efficiency. After all, it takes just as long to make one curry as three, it's as quick to measure out a tablespoon of spice as a teaspoon, and a few pounds of meat cooks in the same time as one. The Dinner Ladies contains 170 recipes to cook now and eat later.Real-food, crowd-pleasing favourites such as spiced slow-cooked lamb shanks or Madras beef curry; veggie-focused 'thinner dinners' such as chickpea burgers or spinach filo pie; and homely desserts such as apricot, raspberry and coconut crumble or vanilla-scented rice pudding.

What is Madness? is Darian Leader's probing study of madness, sanity, and everything in between What separates the sane from the mad? How The Dinner Ladies: 170 Recipes to Cook Now, Eat Later ebook pdf hard or easy is it to tell them apart? And what if the difference is really between being mad and going mad? In this landmark work Darian Leader undermines common conceptions of madness. Through case studies like the apparently 'normal' Harold Shipman, he shows that madness rarely conforms to standard models. What is Madness? explores the idea of quiet madness - that at times many of us live interior lives that are far from sane but allow us to function normally and unthreateningly - he argues that we must seek a new way to assess, treat and deal with those suffering mental health problems. What is Madness? is Darian Leader's radically insightful and masterfully convincing exploration of a painful, complex but endlessly fascinating area of humanity. 'A terrific intellectual stylist' Joseph O' Neill, Guardian 'Engrossing and enlightening ...Leader is as much a philosopher as a psychoanalyst' Metro 'The mad ...have been segregated and often confined; for fear, perhaps, that they will contaminate the rest of us.

A. Vic Kelly: The Curriculum: Theory and Practice

The Curriculum: Theory and Practice

Description

'This book will be of interest to educational practitioners, and many other professionals concerned with the education and development of the young' - ESCalate 'A very well-respected book [and a] Curriculum classic...[which offers] balance to current official publications...One of its strengths is the coherent argument that runs throughout. It is very much a product of the wide knowledge and experience of the author.' - Jenny Houssart, Senior Lecturer, Department of Learning, Curriculum & Communication, Institute of Education, University of London, UK Praise for previous editions: 'I use this book as an essential course text for a module on curriculum theory. It is an excellent text for the whole course' 'Vic Kelly's writing is always concise and informative, but also at times challenging' 'A most comprehensive text that takes the reader beyond content/balance issues values, beliefs and assumptions on the curriculum' This is the sixth edition of a book that has been regularly revised and updated since it was first published in the mid-1970s. A V Kelly's now classic work focuses on the philosophical and political dimensions of curriculum, and especially on the implications for schools and societies of various forms of curriculum. The book outlines what form a curriculum should take if it is concerned to promote a genuine form of education for a genuinely democratic society. Kelly summarises and explains the main aspects of curriculum theory, and shows how these can and should be translated into practice, in order to create an educational and democratic curriculum for all schools at all levels. The book also seeks to show that the politicization of the school curriculum has led to the establishment of policies and practices which demonstrate a failure to understand these principles of curriculum theory and practice. As a result, policies and practices have been implemented which fall short of being adequate. In view of the rapid pace of educational change imposed by various governments over the last 35 years, including New Labour, this book is more relevant than ever.

Palahniuk invites readers to collaborate on this unprecedented hardcover edition: "Maybe between your colors, the artists' designs, and my stories we can create something that endures. Mein Kampf ("My Struggle") is a political manifesto written by Adolf Hitler. It was his only complete book and became the bible of National Socialism in the German Third Reich. It was published in two volumes, which dated 1925 and 1927. By 1939 it had sold 5,200,000 copies and had been translated into 11 different languages. The first volume, entitled Die Abrechnung ("The Settlement of Accounts," or "Revenge"), was written in 1924 in the Bavarian fortress of Landsberg am Lech. Hitler was imprisoned there after the unsuccessful Beer Hall Putsch of 1923. It describes the world of Hitlers youth, the First World War and the betrayal of Germany in 1918. It also expresses Hitlers Racial ideology. According to Hitler, it was necessary for Germans to occupy themselves not merely with the breeding of cats, dogs and horses - but also care for the health and wellbeing of their own Bloodline. The second volume, entitled Die Nationalsozialistische Bewegung ("The National Socialist Movement"), was written after Hitlers release from prison in December 1924. It outlines the political program of National Socialism and includes the measures that National Socialism must pursue in both gaining power and in exercising it thereafter in the new German Reich. In this book Hitler describes an ideology which according to him must shake the world from its slumber. An ideology which is based on the Eternal Laws of Nature. Here you can notice how the foundations of Social Darwinism have been applied in practice. This book has set a path toward a much higher understanding of the self and of our magnificent destiny as living beings part of this Race on our planet. It shows us that we must not look at nature in terms of good or bad, but in an unfiltered manner. It describes what we must do if we want to survive as a people and as a Race. We have to understand that Nature does not forgive weakness and that the truth and reality is what it is, no matter how bad How to Clone a Mammoth: The Science of De-Extinction download epub it may seem or how hard it can portray itself. This book shows the foundations of White Resistance and White Nationalism. It is the foundation and seed for the preservation of our Race. Be advised that this book does not represent the full Racialist ideology, but it is only a foundation as the Origin of Species is a foundation for the Theory of Evolution.

How to Clone a Mammoth: The Science of De-Extinction

Description

Could extinct species, like mammoths and passenger pigeons, be brought back to life? The science says yes. In How to Clone a Mammoth, Beth Shapiro, evolutionary biologist and pioneer in "ancient DNA" research, walks readers through the astonishing and controversial process of de-extinction. From deciding which species should be restored, to sequencing their genomes, to anticipating how revived populations might be overseen in the wild, Shapiro vividly explores the extraordinary cutting-edge science that is being used--today--to resurrect the past. Journeying to far-flung Siberian locales in search of ice age bones and delving into her own research--as well as those of fellow experts such as Svante Paabo, George Church, and Craig Venter--Shapiro considers de-extinction's practical benefits and ethical challenges. Would de-extinction change the way we live? Is this really cloning? What are the costs and risks? And what is the ultimate goal? Using DNA collected from remains as a genetic blueprint, scientists aim to engineer extinct traits--traits that evolved by natural selection over thousands of years--into living organisms. But rather than viewing de-extinction as a way to restore one particular species, Shapiro argues that the overarching goal should be the revitalization and stabilization of contemporary ecosystems. For example, elephants with genes modified to express mammoth traits could expand into the Arctic, re-establishing lost productivity to the tundra ecosystem. Looking at the very real and compelling science behind an idea once seen as science fiction, How to Clone a Mammoth demonstrates how de-extinction will redefine conservation's future.

Once Dead, Twice Shy: A Novel

Description

My name is Madison Avery, and I'm here to tell you that there's more out there than you can see, hear, or touch. Because I'm there. Seeing it. Touching it. Living it. Madison's prom was killer-literally. Now, thanks to a mysterious amulet, she's stuck on Earth: dead but not gone. She has no idea why the dark reaper who did her in was after her, but she's not about to just sit around and let fate take its course. With a little skilled light-bending, the help of a light reaper (one of the good guys ...maybe), her cute crush, and oh yeah, her guardian angel, Madison's ready to take control of her own destiny once and for all, before it takes control of her. Well, if she believed in that stuff.

Housum Professor of History Timothy Snyder: Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning

Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning

Description

"A brilliant, haunting, and profoundly original portrait of the defining tragedy of our time." In this epic history of extermination and survival, Timothy Snyder presents a new explanation of the great atrocity of the twentieth century, and reveals the risks that we face in the twenty-first. Based on new sources from eastern Europe and forgotten testimonies from Jewish survivors, "Black Earth" recounts the mass murder of the Jews as an event that is still close to us, more comprehensible than we would like to think, and thus all the more terrifying. The Holocaust began in a dark but accessible place, in Hitler's mind, with the thought that the elimination of Jews would restore balance to the planet and allow Germans to win the resources they desperately needed. Such a worldview could be realized only if Germany destroyed other states, so Hitler's aim was a colonial war in Europe itself. In the zones of statelessness, almost all Jews died. A few people, the righteous few, aided them, without support from institutions. Much of the new research in this book is devoted to understanding these extraordinary individuals. The almost insurmountable difficulties they faced only confirm the dangers of state destruction and ecological panic. These men and women should be emulated, but in similar circumstances few of us would do so. By overlooking the lessons of the Holocaust, Snyder concludes, we have misunderstood modernity and endangered the future. The early twenty-first century is coming to resemble the early twentieth, as growing preoccupations with food and water accompany ideological challenges to global order. Our world is closer to Hitler's than we like to admit, and saving it requires us to see the Holocaust as it was -- and ourselves as we are. Groundbreaking, authoritative, and utterly absorbing, "Black Earth" reveals a Holocaust that is not only history but warning."

Written by Brad Meltzer Art by Ed Benes & Sandra Hope Cover by Michael Turner New York Times best-selling author Brad Meltzer (IDENTITY CRISIS, The Book of Fate) redefines the World's Greatest Super Team for a new generation in this trade paperback collecting issues #1-7 of the new series, with foldout pages, variant covers and much more! Advance-solicited; on sale September 10 * 224 pg, FC, $17.99 US If the rise of Islamic State can overthrow powerful states in a matter of weeks, what kind of a secure future can the world expect? After more than a decade of the war on terror, security specialists thought that Islamist paramilitary movements were in decline; the threat from ISIS in Syria and Iraq, Boko Haram in Nigeria, al-Qaida in Yemen, the chaos in Libya and the return of the Taliban in Afghanistan have all shown that to be wishful thinking. Once again the West is at war in the Middle East. Paul Rogers, the distinguished global security specialist, provides a much-needed look at the rise of such global terrorist movements from the margins and presents a new argument as troubling as it is compelling. While Islamic State has taken root in the Middle East and North Africa and has increasing impact across the world as thousands of young men and women rally to its cause, Rogers Exile's Valor: A Novel of Valdemar free download pdf argues that it should be seen not just as a threat in its own right but as a marker of a much more dangerous world riddled with irregular war.

Human Personality and its Survival of Bodily Death: v.iv.

Description

First published nearly 100 years ago, this work is still considered by many to be the most comprehensive book on telepathy and the unconscious. Regarded by psychologist William James as "the pioneer who staked out a vast tract of mental wilderness and planted the flag of genuine science on it," Frederic Myers brought together, in a book richly documented with fact, a great store of information on extrasensory perception, hypnotism, and related topics. Dover's complete reprint of the one-volume edition of Myers' classic makes the work much more accessible to students and teachers of psychology as well as to interested general readers.
